Nervous

We are doing a test reading of the play we (Matt, myself and a fellow teacher) wrote with the intention of producing at the school next year. We are getting a bunch of the drama/film students in at lunchtime to read through the first draft and give us some feedback on whether they would want to do it a) at all b) as a play c) as a film d) as both.

I actually feel quite nervous about it. I’m not sure if students have the give diplomatic* feedback skills. I may be quite crushed by a negative or indifferent response.

It is hard when you’ve written something that contains elements of humour. I’m not sure if the jokes we will be appreciated. It is hard to judge if you are actually funny or not. I find I’m able to reasonably accurately judge whether I’m created something that is scary/interesting/moving etc but humour is always less certain.

I hope they like it. I hope they get enthusiastic about the story. I hope they don’t feel like they have to do it if they don’t like it.

* Diplomatic for me just tend to mean overwhelming positive and encouraging with constructive criticism sugar-coated and wrapped in soft and squishy marshmallow.

I'm sure it will be awesome - after all I was part of the writing team :)

I actually think that the areas the script is strong in are the ones that are likely to be of appeal to teenagers - it's quick moving, has a decent amount of humour in it and so on.

The area I most want to beef up in a second draft is to give it some more depth. Depth is something that *some* teenagers will appreciate, but the absence or lack of depth may not detract much from a first reading.

This is not to say that there isn't some depth there - I just want to develop it more :)

I'd be keen to check out the script at some point, whenever I next get to see you guys.
